Short Bio
Sebastiano Battiato is a full professor of Computer Science at the University of Catania. He received his degree in Computer Science (summa cum laude) in 1995 from the University of Catania and his Ph.D. in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from the University of Naples in 1999. From 1999 to 2003 he was the leader of the “Imaging” team at STMicroelectronics in Catania. He joined the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Catania in 2004 (respectively as assistant professor, associate professor in 2011 and full professor in 2016). He has been Chairman of the Undergraduate Program in Computer Science (2012-2017), and Rector's delegate for Education: postgraduates and Phd (2013-2016). He is currently the Scientific Coordinator of the PhD Program in Computer Science at the University of Catania. He is involved in research and directorship of the IPLab research lab. He coordinates IPLab’s participation on large scale projects funded by national and international funding bodies, as well as by private companies. Prof. Battiato has participated as principal investigator in many international and national research projects. His research interests include Computer Vision, Imaging technology and Multimedia Forensics. He has edited 6 books and co-authored about 200 papers in international journals, conference proceedings and book chapters and has also been a guest editor of several special issues published in International Journals. He is also co-inventor of 22 international patents, reviewer for several international journals, and has been a regular member of numerous international conference committees. He has been the Chair of several international events. He is an associate editor of the SPIE Journal of Electronic Imaging and of the IET Image Processing Journal. He is Director (and Co-Founder) of the International Computer Vision Summer School (ICVSS), Sicily, Italy. He is the recipient of the 2017 PAMI Mark Everingham Prize for the series of annual ICVSS schools and of the 2011 Best Associate Editor Award of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology. He is a IEEE senior member.

Social Awareness in Robotics: From Perceiving Human Signals to Understanding Interaction

Silvia Rossi
University of Naples Federico II, Italy

Short Bio
Silvia Rossi is Full Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technologies at the University of Naples Federico II, where she serves as Scientific Director of the PRISCA Lab (Projects of Intelligent Robotics and Advanced Cognitive Systems). She holds an MSc in Physics from the University of Naples Federico II and a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies from the University of Trento. Prof. Rossi has coordinated and contributed to numerous European and international research projects. She is currently the Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the HORIZON-MSCA-2023-DN project SWEET (Social aWareness for sErvicE roboTs), and Principal Investigator of the national PRIN project EXPERT-MI (Embodied eXPERTise through Mutual Interpretation). She has chaired IEEE RO-MAN conferences and serves on programme committees for leading conferences in human–robot interaction and artificial intelligence. Her research focuses on socially assistive robotics, human–robot interaction, cognitive architectures and user profiling, with particular emphasis on computational methods that enable autonomous agents to adapt their behaviour for effective and trustworthy interaction with humans. Prof. Rossi has authored more than 200 publications in international journals, books and conference proceedings.

Abstract
Social awareness is central to meaningful human–robot interaction. To act appropriately alongside people, robots must move beyond detecting faces, gestures, speech or affective expressions, and interpret what these signals mean for a particular individual, situation and evolving relationship. They must infer goals, emotions, intentions, preferences and interactional needs, while recognising that the same cue may have different meanings across people and contexts. This talk explores how multimodal pattern recognition, adaptive inference and contextual user modelling can support this shift from perceiving human signals to understanding interaction. Drawing inspiration from key dimensions of human Theory of Mind, it considers how robots can build and continuously refine representations of users’ cognitive, emotional and social states. Particular attention is given to social affordances: the cues through which people, environments and interaction dynamics make certain actions timely, appropriate or acceptable. Such socially aware models can enable personalised, adaptive robot behavior in real-world assistive and collaborative settings. The talk will also consider the complementary need for robots to make their own behaviour intelligible to people, as a foundation for trust, acceptance and sustained interaction.
