Brief Bio
Ana Fred received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering, in 1989 and 1994, respectively, both from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. She is a Faculty Member of IST since 1986, where she has been a professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and more recently with the Department of Biomedical Engineering. She is a researcher at the Pattern and Image Analysis Group of the Instituto de Telecomunicações. Her main research areas are on pattern recognition, both structural and statistical approaches, with application to data mining, learning systems, behavioral biometrics, and biomedical applications. She has done pioneering work on clustering, namely on cluster ensemble approaches. Recent work on biosensors hardware (including BITalino – and ECG-based biometrics (Vitalidi project) have been object of several nacional and internacional awards, as well as wide dissemination on international media, constituting a success story of knowledge transfer from research to market. Maria De Marsico is Full Professor at Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Computer Science. She graduated in Computer Science at University of Salerno. Her research interests concern the study of biometric systems (face, iris, gait, multi-biometric systems), pattern recognition, image processing, and human-machine interaction, in particular, issues of accessibility, emotion recognition, and biometric interaction. She is Editor in Chief for Special Issues of Pattern Recognition Letters, Associate Editor of Pattern Recognition, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Biometrics, Behavior, and Identity Scien ce, and has been guest editor of several Special Issues of high-ranked journals. Maria has been member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Biometrics Compendium and Editor in Chief of IEEE Biometrics Council Newsletter. She has been co-editor with Michele Nappi (University of Salerno) and Massimo Tistarelli (University of Sassari) of the book "Face recognition in adverse conditions" published by IGI Global, and with Michele Nappi (University of Salerno) Hugo Proença (University of Beira Interior) of the book “Human Recognition in Outdoor Unconstrained Environments - Using Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning Methods for Biometrics” edited by Elsevier – Academic Press. She is Program co-Chair of the International Conference on Pattern Recognition Applications and Methods - ICPRAM since 2013. Gabriella Sanniti di Baja, born in 1950, received the laurea degree (cum laude) in physics from the "Federico II University" of Naples, Italy, in 1973, and the PhD honoris causa from the Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2002. Since 1973, she has been working in the field of image processing and pattern recognition at the Institute of Cybernetics E. Caianiello of the Italian National Research Council, where she is director of research. Her current research interests include 2D and 3D shape representation and analysis. She has published a number of papers in international journals and conference proceedings, is the c oeditor-in-chief of Pattern Recognition Letters, has been President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) as well as of the Italian Group of Researchers in Pattern Recognition (GIRPR), is IAPR Fellow and Foreign Member of the Royal Society of Sciences at Uppsala, Sweden. ... Walter G. Kropatsch Vienna University of Technology Austria

Brief Bio
Since 1990 Walter G. Kropatsch is full professor at TU Wien. He received his diploma degree in Technical Mathematics from the Technical University in Graz. He then moved to Grenoble, France to get the Maître d'Informatique from the University of Grenoble. His PhD in 1982 was on the "Registration of Satellite Images with Maps". In 1984 was invited by Prof. Azriel Rosenfeld to spend a year at the Center for Automation Research of the University of Maryland. The creation of the first group in Austria dealing with pattern recognition and image processing in 1990 was jointly coordinated with the Austrian Association o f Pattern Recognition (AAPR), that he initiated and led from 1984 until 1995. Under his leadership the AAPR became a member of the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in which he held several leading positions, 2004-2006 he was its president. In 1996 he organized the main conference of the IAPR, the International Conference of Pattern Recognition Wien, Austria. His scientific research focuses on pyramidal representations of images since his collaboration with Azriel Rosenfeld in 1984/85. The current graph-based pyramids follow similar concepts with the advantage that graphs are much more flexible data structures than the regular grids as currently used as architectures in deep learning. In his more than 400 scientific contributions many other concepts and applications have been addressed. He is currently associate editor of the journal of Electronic Imaging, the journal of the Visual Computer and of several special issues in Pattern Recognition and Pattern Recognition Letters. ...
